Day 1 Monday Day 2 Tuesday Day 4 Thursday Day 5 Friday 2009 Mission Trip

George's Team
By Leah R.
We are almost finished!
Within three days we've legitimately put a roof over someone's head, made sure she wouldn't get electrocuted when turning a light on in the rain, made her back bathroom useable, and made her spare bedroom livable.
When we first arrived at Joselyn's beautiful home she was somewhat skittish. As she got to know us more and started to love us more, she opened up incredibly. Now I am  known as "Trish" or "My Adopted Daughter from New Hampshire." Preston is now known as "My Big Son."
Joselyn has welcomed us not only into her home, but into her family, and into her heart.

Wednesday started off looking like it could be a problem. We were to continue to finish the roofing and the weather forecast was for rain. Although the day started with a slight drizzle, overcast and cold, it cleared up by late morning and the roof work could continue. Somebody up there must be looking out for us. In addition to the roof work, two new screen/storm doors were added, as well as three new smoke detectors. The boys, Chris and Colin, could also continue their painting as the weather stayed dry and the house started to look very nice.

Lunch, as usual, was prepared by our homeowner, Marion, and the roasted chicken with barbeque sauce was enjoyed by all. On Tuesday Marion had prepared "Calles", a type of beignet which includes rice. A number of people had commented on how tasty they were and wondered about getting a recipe. Marion said she makes these from memory and didn't have a written recipe; however, she would look one up for us. On Wednesday, Marion presented us with a new batch of Calles and a handwritten recipe. She said she couldn't find a written recipe, so she backed another batch and wrote down her recipe as she went along. A copy is available for all who want to see it, along with Marion's phone number, "in case of questions". Marion and Louise' hospitality is wonderful and we truly believe they look forward to our daily arrival, not only for our work but more importantly for our community. They seem used to lots of coming and goings as friends and family are continually stopping by or calling, so they are definitely not lonely.

As we finished for the day, it was good to note that work was pretty much on schedule and there were no mishaps.

Frank's Team Wednesday
By Charlene Isham

We arrived at the site at 8 a.m. and had a short conversation with James, the owner. He is thrilled with the progress.

The trailer was a construction trailer and is being converted into a home. There is a small kitchen area, big enough for a small refrigerator, small range, a sink and very little cabinet space. There are two bedrooms, one about 9 x 9, the other 9 x 12, with a small bathroom, with a tub but no shower. No closets, but many electrical outlets.

The team spent most of the day mudding and sanding the walls of the bedrooms, the bath, and the kitchen.

Some of the team started cleaning the front yard of the beer and soda cans and other debris. The yard is very wet and muddy.

Jack Daly went to turn on the water at the end of the day to wash out the pails and trowels. Because of the water and overgrown grass and weeds, he stepped on a board that couldn't been seen. It was over the septic system. The board broke and Jack fell and hurt his arm and shoulder. Tylenol helped the pain.

Everyone on the team is working extremely hard making good progress and enjoying what they are doing. It is a pleasure to be working with Frank, Tom,  Peter, Frankie, Jack, and Marcia.

 Wednesday Night
"Ode to Larry"
Written and sung by:
Karen Hagy, Peter and Martha Dalrymple, Molly Olsen, and Kelsey Cowen
Sung to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad"

Larry's been working on the jobsite
All his live long day.
He's been cutting off his fingers
Every single day.
Lord, please keep him in your care now.
Keep him away from the saw.
Can't you hear the doctor shouting?
"Stay away from tools!"

Larry won't you stop?
Larry won't you stop?
Larry won't you stop with the sawing?
Larry don't you saw!
Larry don't you saw!
Larry don't you saw no more!

Someone's been spilling too much blood.
Someone's been spilling too much blood.
Someone's been spilling too much blood,
Cutting off his fingers all day.
